Kyocera Rise Review

Formerly Sanyo, Kyocera has had their share of innovative designs and they have held their own in the entry-level market. The Rise embraces this philosophy, bringing Android 4.0 and a sliding QWERTY keyboard at a low price. Packaged with the Rise...

Mostly vanilla Android 4.0 ; The keyboard is mostly comfortable to use

Call quality is not as good as its predecessor ; Screen is still poor quality ; Web browsing is slow, even on Wi-Fi

The Rise offers some nice features, such as a decent slide out QWERTY and a mostly vanilla Ice Cream Sandwich build, but in the end it has too many shortcomings. Despite being bigger and higher resolution than the Milano, the Rise’s screen is still of...

Kyocera Rise

The Kyocera Rise is a chunky yet compact smartphone that offers a taste of Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich on the cheap. It's one of the smallest handsets ever to be released to market with ICS, and that's part of what makes it quite an attractive...

"For $39.99 and plans starting at $35, it can't be beat!"

The phone only costs $39.99 (at retail stores) and you can keep the service for as little as $35 a month. The Kyocera Rise is comparable to many higher priced phones that don't even have a physical keyboard and goes above and beyond what I need it to...

Android 4.0 allows you to access all apps and games

I have had the phone freeze a couple times but only twice in over a week and the phone is easily reset

"Android 4.0 and easy to hold and use."

Got it on sale for $30 so I'm not really complaining. Everything else works fine but next time I will try a phone with a dual-core processor for smoother video.

To fix visibility go into the display settings. Turn off automatic brightness. Set keyboard timeout to "same as sleep". For battery life, go into the eco mode settings and activate each "leaf" except for the sleep and the auto-rotate options.

Three major drawbacks: no memopad, no "to-do" list, and videos can stutter or stall (not sure if it's the processor or Virgin's network). Had to get accustomed to the GUI and closing/switching between functions.

"A good budget phone."

If you haven't had a very high end smart phone you won't really see any issues with this phone. You are buying a budget phone that works well and is well worth the money. If you compare this phone to others in its price range and class you'll find that...

1. Slide out Qwerty keyboard.

1. Power button gets in the way a bit when using the slide out keyboard, takes a little getting used to when you text so you don't bump it.
