Apple MacBook Air review (2018): A good buy and a tough call

The new Air is precisely the upgrade many users have been holding out for, with a slimmed-down body, sharper Retina display, long battery life and a useful Touch ID fingerprint sensor. Though it's more than fast enough for common use cases, some might...

Lighter ; Slimmed-down design ; Sharp Retina display ; Long battery life ; Spacious and reliable trackpad ; It has Touch ID

Underpowered compared to a similarly priced MacBook Pro ; No option to upgrade the processor ; No more SD slot ; Screen is dimmer than the Pro's

Apple MacBook Air review: Rebooted as a thinner, lighter, more expensive laptop

This reimagined MacBook Air fixes almost all previous design issues, but not without adding a couple of its own.

The MacBook is now smaller and lighter, with a better display, faster processors and a bigger touchpad. The MacOS experience and all-day battery are still big selling points.

The starting price has shot up significantly, despite sticking with dual-core CPUs. The shallow butterfly keyboard and limited ports may feel like a step back from the previous Air.

The MacBook Air's long overdue makeover adds welcome additions like a high-res screen and Touch ID, but it includes some unwelcome trade-offs -- including a much higher price.

Apple MacBook Air (2018)

Though no speedster, the refreshed MacBook Air finally gets a Retina Display and updated components, making it a sleek ultraportable laptop worthy of its pioneering predecessor's name.

Retina Display offers vivid colors. Very comfortable Force Touch trackpad. Secure boot capability. Two Thunderbolt 3 ports. Excellent battery life.

No CPU configuration options. Y-series, not U-series, CPU. No touch screen. No USB Type-A ports or dedicated video output. Shallow key travel. Expensive as configured. Occasional fan noise.

Bottom Line: Though no speedster, the refreshed MacBook Air finally gets a Retina Display and updated components, making it a sleek ultraportable laptop worthy of its pioneering predecessor's name.

Apple MacBook Air (2018) review: Return of the Mac

Its first major remodel for some years, the new Air brings a smaller footprint, higher-res display, Touch ID and a divisive keyboard. Is it a winner?

High-res ‘Retina’ display with smaller bezel than previous Air models ; Large trackpad with Force Touch control ; Touch ID login via fingerprint is great ; Smaller and lighter footprint adds to appeal

Loud and sometimes unresponsive keyboard ; Only Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) ports and no SD card slot ; Confuses the MacBook/Air/Pro lineup ; No Face ID ; Strong Windows 10 competition now

A remodel that's been long overdue, the new Air brings a shrunken footprint, higher-res display, less bezel, Touch ID login, fewer ports, a divisive keyboard and a higher price tag than its predecessor. Some great features for sure, but a few irks hold...

Apple MacBook Air 2018 (i5, 256 GB) Laptop Review

Notebookcheck reviews the new 2018 Apple MacBook Air with a Core i5 CPU and 256 GB SSD storage. The highlight is the new 13.3-inch Retina display, which fixes one of the biggest issues we had with the previous generations.

high quality case;good screen;2x USB-C w/ Thunderbolt 3;long battery runtime;great touchpad;Touch-ID fingerprint scanner;often silent operation;very good speakers;decent everyday performance

comparatively low CPU performance;display is not as good as on the MacBook Pros;only USB-C and stereo jack;fan is way too loud for this level of performance;long charging time;old Wi-Fi module without Bluetooth 5.0;no SD reader;very high prices for...

Apple MacBook Air 13″ (2018) review

The lightest MacBook finally gets its long-awaited update - is it a breath of fresh Air?

Screen a significant step up from previous gen Air ; Classy design with outstanding keyboard ; Same great battery life, despite hardware upgrades

No longer as affordable as the Air once was ; Only slightly faster than before ; Loses ports in the name of thinness

Not as affordable as the Air used to be, but this latest version justifies the added expense with a stunning design, screen and features. More than enough MacBook for most people.
