Brilliantly sharp pictures, superb colour reproduction

Fujifilm continues to demonstrate that it is the only manufacturer that has successfully addressed the issue of image noise. The Finepix F40fd is an attractively designed, extremely well made camera with a good range of features and outstanding image...

Facial-recognition technology. No shutter lag. Good video quality. SD card support.

Sluggish (continuous) burst mode. Some purple fringing in test shots. Can't adjust flash illumination.

Great metal build, compact, fast operation, good image quality, low noise up to ISO 800, simple to use, power management

No optical viewfinder, detail loss at highest ISO 2000 settings from noise reduction processing, no manual control (manual mode is actually a simple Program AE mode)

The extra resolution offered on the F40fd might make it a better marketing proposition but means there are a few extra niggles in terms of noise over it’s lower resolution Fuji counterparts and with some slight shadow noise issues when viewed closely...

No optical or mechanical image stabilization; slightly sluggish performance; no aperture-priority or shutter-priority modes.

Fuji's FinePix F40fd is a nice point-and-shoot that produces decent images, though it's a tad slow and lacks image stabilization.

Unfortunately, there's still no sight of an optical image stabilisation system and, if we had our way, we'd want a 28mm wide-angle lens on the shooter as well. When all's said and done, Fujifilm's move to adopt SD cards is definitely a strategic one....
